Koi

Koi (, UK / kɔɪ /, Japan:? [ko i]) or more specifically Nishikigoi (锦鲤, [niɕi̥ki ɡo.i], literally "brocaded carp"?), are ornamental domesticated varieties of carp (Cyprinus carpio), which are kept for decorative purposes in an outdoor koi pond or water garden.


Koi is among the longest-living vertebrates, with some animals that lived more than 200 years. [citation needed] The most popular category is Gosanke koi, which consists of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, Showa Sanshoku and varieties.


Koi varieties are distinguished by colors, patterns, and scalation. Some of the main colors of white, black, red, yellow, blue, and cream. While color variations that may be almost limitless, breeders have identified and the name of a certain category. The most popular categories are Gosanke, which consists of the Kohaku, Taisho Sanshoku, Showa Sanshoku and varieties.


Koi varieties are still actively developed. Ghost koi, developed in the 1980s, and has become very popular in England. There are hybrids of wild fish and Ogon koi and are distinguished by their metallic scale. Butterfly koi (also known as the Longfin koi, or carp Dragon) was also developed in the 1980s, famous for its fins and their long and flowing. They are a hybrid koi with Asian carp. Butterfly koi and koi Spirit who is considered by some to be not true Nishikigoi.

butterfly koi seem to lack some of the body size of regular koi, but the overall fish can run as long as 36 to 40 inches in the right pond
